I just got the GMC-320 and want to test irradiated London Blue Topaz, the 320 is not detecting anything and I'm wondering if it is working correctly since these stones go through a nuclear detector to change color, I would think the stone should show some activity above normal but I am just reading background of 24CPM. Where is the tube so I can place the stone more accurately, or did I purchase the wrong type of Radiation Detector?

If the unit does not detect the radiation, then it is either no radiation or too low to detect. You can try to use total count to test. Turn on the unit and put it with your target for a few hours. Compare this value with a normal background value.

An irradiated object doesn't become radioactive in general. I think only neutrons can activate a material. Gammas won't make something radioactive.
