I just got my GMC-300E and I would like to know what I can use to check if it's working right. Any thing will help Thanks

Common safe sources are vaselibe glass, fiestaware. They are easily found on eBay, at cheap price. I you do long measurments with software, Lo-Salt (potassium chloride) is also a good source and can be found in every supermarket :)

Thanks for your info. I'm getting a reading of about 20 CPM / 0.012mR/H...whatever that last measurement is. That is with it setting on my coffee table in the family room. Thanks again for the post....

something radioactive!

background is about 0.1 usv to 0.2 usually.
smoke detectors might make it go up a tiny bit.
take it on an airplane and its way high (turn off the alarm)
xray machines
thermonuclear war
