Problem: Sometimes the backlight comes on all by itself. Usually it will time out according to the settings, but on occasion it just stays on. I see no logic in this behavior and wonder if the unit is starting to fail.

So. most likely you turned on the Motion Detection in menu, and let the motion detection pointed on back light. This means once the gyro detects a vibration , it turns on the back light.

The vibration may come from the outside of the unit, or may be the click sound of the unit speaker.
