Alpha, beta, gamma etc?
Is alpha important to measure?

GQ meters cover all three radiation types. However some meters use Geiger tubes that are specifically built to detect alpha radiation. So for that you would want one of the 600 series meters. All of the rest detect primarily beta and gamma (and Xray).

Alpha is very low energy and does not penetrate human tissue. However if you were to ingest food that was contaminated with alpha emitting radiation it could do lots of damage to your innards. So yes, it is important, but you really need a mica windowed tube, such as those in the 600 meters, to detect. Then through a comparison process where you shield the window with even just a piece of paper and test again, you can see if alpha or some other more energetic radiation.
