| Sorry, I jumped the gun, 1.7.0 doesn't work with this particular chip nor do the drivers from windows (I believe they're the same). I played around and found a fix for Windows 8. Install the driver from here even though 8 isn't supported.(GQGMCGeigerCounterUSBDriver1.5.0.) Go to the Device Manager, right click "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port", click properties, and under the Driver tab, roll back the driver. Should roll back to version 3.4.25.218, date 10/7/2011 and run flawlessly. |

Many thanks. New to Win8. Installed latest USB drivers to no avail. Your suggestion of rolling back the driver works great!
Bought the $10 pro software and have trouble installing the download. I must use a little patients, and figure it out! |

FIXED
I tried the above and I confirm it works.
My original problem was USB not recognized Com Port 3 with Error 10 and a yellow triangle.
So, I had the same problem- I'm running Win 8.1 (64 bit) on an HP AMD Pavillion - With the Prolific simple (Audio cable) Serial port to USB converter.
This driver works for me - Prolific 3.4.25.218 from 10/7/2011.
I can't vouch for this site but I also found it reproduced here with instructions....

You could also Google for "Prolific 3.4.25.218"
I'm not altogether sure where I originally downloaded it from but it does work- flawlessly.
NOTES
(i) Goto devices and drivers, Pick the USB port (with yellow triangle) Right click - then properties.
Select > Hardware >properties> GENERAL > Driver > Change settings > Update driver -
let me pick the driver from a list
(ii) Choose the update driver and pick this one from the advanced driver properties window.
(iii) I did not need a re-boot, nor did I need to choose "run as administrator"
(iv) Don't forget to set the COMx,38400,n,8,1 settings to suit GQ.
