Hello.
I've GMC-320+ V5 device with default tube, and have alarm set to 55 CPM, alarm went off this morning indicating maximum 103 CPM.
Initially I thought it's a glitch and didn't give it a thought, but nevertheless decided to set up a software and download the data.
At the time device was in powersave mode resting on the window, connected to USB powersupply and running for 2 weeks in this configuration.
So here's the raw csv data for the event +-2 minutes.

As you can see, event lasted at least 20 seconds.
Can any expert or support person tell me if it's a real reading or a glitch? I did disconnect it from USB power but I can't tell how fast, maybe 40-50 seconds after the first beep. But it doesn't look like a power issue to me. Neither it looks like a one-second glitch. I didn't reboot it, it just went back to normal after a minute(alarm ceased). AFAIR when I picked it up the speaker was on too and it wasn't clicking much anymore. Which means I pulled the cable after the decay burst finished.
Unfortunately I don't have a camera set up there yet but after reading many stories on scapped medical sources I started to think if it's a real reading, it might have been something in a truck that travelled by, about 70 meters away from that window I have a road which is heavily used by trucks. Very very unlikely though considering it's Japan but this still bothers me.
And unfortunately I don't have another device. Would've been very simple if both devices would go off at the same time, then it's a real reading no doubt.

I can post a binary file if requested.

@neko60,
I already asked the support and that's what they said. It was noise from the tube. I asked if they're sure about it and they said it's very high chance that it's noise. But I think its 70(noise) - 30(true). Maybe one of the answers here is true XD.

It could also be caused by someone passing by who had a recent nuclear medicine treatment or CT scan. I've also heard of pets getting such treatments.
Stargazer 40 Posted - 11/30/2018 : 09:11:20
I think EmfDef probably replied on behalf of GQ. Noise of some kind and could (as ullix is hinting at I think) be EMF event. The meter's electronics aren't really shielded against that.
nekos60 Posted - 11/30/2018 : 02:36:27
Gotta be contrails anyway. On a serious note, no reply from support so far but other people on reddit hint it might have been a space burst or bit flip or other effect caused by a high energy particle.
ullix Posted - 11/30/2018 : 02:18:39
Is there some (heavy) electric equipment nearby, like elevator, compressor, refrigerator, misfiring fluorescent lamps, ... ?

If not, it sure has to be Alien-Fly-By! I heard these aliens are more resistant to radiation than earthly truck drivers!
EmfDev Posted - 11/29/2018 : 12:25:42
Maybe a car which carries some radioactive elements drove across the street? lol

On a serious note. My supervisor said it is noise and very unlikely that it's real. Need to verify with a second counter or need to be repeated to check if it's real.

No serious comments/adds come to mind, so extraordinary/ridiculous event tossed out there - UFO or alien space craft fly by.
nekos60 Posted - 11/29/2018 : 07:12:41
I emailed GQ support.
No weird neighbours and it never happened before.
No operating nuclear plant on Hokkaido island, and afaik they don't dump it anywhere in Japan. And nowhere to transport such items using this countryside road.
Waste shielding shouldn't let that much through. It's deadly if I got 0.6 uSv/h at almost a hundred meters away. Nearest neighbours are also about 50+ meters away. Nothing's going on here.
ikerrg Posted - 11/29/2018 : 06:54:31
Unless some illegal behaviour is happening when transporting radioactive stuff (e.g. scrap metal, which is unlikely), I can imagine that nuclear waste is transported properly shielded (not only with the truck walls), and during the night time. I do not know the legal limits of emission for these kinds of transports, but at 70 meters the radiation is reduced by 4900 times compared to 1 m, so the radiation would be massive after the shielding at 1 meter of distance. That is unlikely.

Maybe you have a neighbour doing weird experiments with an x-ray machine... I don’t know. It would be interesting if GQ could advise on the reliability of such a measurement, because to me it looks good data.
nekos60 Posted - 11/29/2018 : 06:30:37
Thanks for your input, I guess I'll take a ride to a nearby potential destinations for the trucks. I live in a countryside but the road next to my house is primarily used by heavy vehicles and I had this thought that "what if". Very very unlikely but if these readings are indeed true this may indicate something quite dangerous, since it's 70+ meters away the closest distance and likely a sheet of metal(truck wall) between object and a very small geiger tube, this is asking for trouble.
This is probably a scrap metal recycle car, right? Most trucks around here simply carry dirt and rocks. But considering the distance between the road and the sheet of metal it's impossible to imagine a rock or even dirty soil would be emitting this much? It's 8-10 times the background levels in an instant.
I am newb on radioactivity topic but i did a quick search on google for natural bursts and the only thing that came up is a gamma bursts from the space. But if that was a star burst then other detectors in Japan, in particular, nuclear plant checkpoints should have had this burst too, but I didn't find any on the online graphs for a nearby nuclear powerplant today! And they have 10 publicly available detectors around the place. I checked them within 10 minutes after the event. And rechecked now. It was just me.
Any more inputs from expert persons? I need a support person here as this may be serious. I just don't want to cause an unnecessary panic or make unnecessary moves.
ikerrg Posted - 11/29/2018 : 05:25:11
Well, before I finished reading I was already thinking that the event could be real, and I was going to ask if you live close to a road or a railway where they could be transporting nuclear fuel. The data looks OK to me because it is not just a random spike, it seems to be increasing and decreasing smoothly. And the maximum value does not look dangerous even if you are exposed to that for a few hours (it is double the dose rate than in an aeroplane at 11 km). Anybody has any other comments?
